MOON A MOON
A death sentence – for calling moon a moon and terming it blasphemy – just because the canon law thought otherwise, seemed as outrageous as could be. All he did was to embrace the Copernican theory (which propounded that sun, and not earth was at the centre of the universe). And how could he refute what the Catholics said? But he did, and paid with his life. Copernicus caused a stir, Galileo endured torment, but none met their end the way Bruno did. As I stared at the engraved writing on the fountain at Campo de’ Fiori that read, “Fadel bene lassa dire” meaning ‘do well and let them talk’… my heart cried, only if the farcical dogmas would let them…
